I don't think my words can do justice to the raw, poignant beauty of these vignettes. Simple but honest language that drove deep into the heart of Esperanza's every day existence as a Latina growing up in Chicago. A re-read for family bedtime story time.
I'd remembered loving this when I was a young adult, and the general feel of this, but not much of the details when I chose it for the story time shelf. Once it was chosen and I started reading it, I did worry a bit it if was an appropriate choice for everyone listening, but aside from the SA chapter, which I cried as I read, it was fine, and even that was never graphic enough to feel like I should just stop reading.

I have wanted to read this book for a long time. Beautifully written in a series of vignettes about a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago. So many poetic, astute, and deeply observant lines.
