I don't think my words can do justice to the raw, poignant beauty of these vignettes. Simple but honest language that drove deep into the heart of Esperanza's every day existence as a Latina growing up in Chicago. I grew up in a predominantly white town, and my experience with non-white America is very limited. It will take time, but through literature such as this, my heart and mind opens up more and more to understanding... ...more

A re-read for family bedtime story time.

I'd remembered loving this when I was a young adult, and the general feel of this, but not much of the details when I chose it for the story time shelf. Once it was chosen and I started reading it, I did worry a bit it if was an appropriate choice for everyone listening, but aside from the SA chapter, which I cried as I read, it was fine, and even that was never graphic enough to feel like I should just stop reading.

I read this book for the first time with my Freshman English class. They really got in to it; I, however, have yet to figure out what the big deal is with this book.

Recommended to me for use in a graduate assignment, I fell in love with Esperanza and of course with Sandra Cisneros. The prose was crisp and lilting, and the stories relatable to anyone able to remember their adolescence with some degree of accuracy.

This was perfect for the #readharder challenge task of a book set less than 100 miles from your home. I listened to the audio read by Cisneros which included a wonderful preface. Highly recommended.
