I couldn't put this book down.
From the very first sentence I was hooked.
Maybe that's because I too was a bitter teenager surrounded by adults making terrible choices. So I was immediately empathetic.
But then within 3 pages I began to empathise with one of the adult characters because I too have been the adult making terrible decisions.
I liked all the characters, even the ones given the role of villain.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a light, easy read that doesn't leave you with the guilt of most light, easy reads. That's because it is highly intelligent, slightly ridiculous and completely hilarious.

If you cannot identify with Bernadette's rants, agoraphobia and her general disgust with the ordinariness of life, then you're probably not an over-educated introvert with an intense fear of failure. However, those are my people. So this exaggerated story of one of my people amused me beyon

I was really enjoying this book until the very end. The story is told though a series of letters, emails, and personal narratives, all explaining (or trying to) the events leading up to the disappearance of Bernadette Fox. It would be perfect except the ending. That damn ending.

I wish for half stars. I feel like this is somewhere between a 3 and 4. The ending wasn't as satisfying as I would have liked, and quite honestly I had to make myself finish the last 30 pages or so. But the rest of the book was a fun and funny read and commentary on life in Seattle. I'm really unsure of how appealing this book might be to people outside of Seattle; it feels like an awful lot of inside jokes and references and I wonder if a reader might feel alienated a little by that?
