This is definitely a contender for my favorite book of 2013. http://youtu.be/-ApX1adwbYk

3.5 stars, again. Cute epistolary novel with interesting characters. There was a moment when you suddenly see Bernadette's eccentricities from an entirely different angle, and I think there's something important there about who we are versus who we are perceived to be... But when this book starts sniffing around heavy topics, it just doesn't work. There were parts where I knew I was supposed to be sad (or angry or worried, etc.), but I just didn't feel it. The tone is too light and romping to su

An absurd and engaging story, told using alternating narrative perspectives as well as emails, faxes, letters, and other documentation. Essentially, Bernadette Fox panics while planning a trip to Antarctica and sets off a series of events that lead to her disappearance. Her husband and daughter then try to find her. One thing I really liked about the mixed perspectives in the book is that you get various people's takes on the same thing. So when Bernadette does something that seems maybe a littl

She and her husband buy an old girl's school, turn it into a

Unique. Snarky. Quirky. Current. And yet I found it meaningful as well. Bernadette Fox is unlike any character I've read before. Her genius mind doesn't allow her to buy into the gossip and seemingly silly and irrelevant projects of the "gnats" who are parents of her daughter's classmates. Her daughter, Bee, is her only meaningful aspect in life. Bee turn out to b perhaps the most mature character in the book, surrounded by adults who can't seem to get it together. ...more
