What a journey this book is!!   And woowhee I can see why it gets shelved as smut!  But more than any of that, this book was AMAZEBALLS.

Sarah Waters demands the reader's full engagement, you have to work for it and settle in for the long haul  which is why this ís only the second book I've read by her.  But she makes it so worthwhile, which is why I regret this is only the second boo

I re-read this for a book club and have to say that I felt pretty much the same about it as I did in my first review. I remembered not being that impressed when I read it the first time, and so was surprised at how much I enjoyed the first section, but it again seemed to go downhill from there. I don't think I'd be as hard on the sex scenes if I re-wrote my earlier review (I was surprised that there wasn't nearly as much sex as I remembered) but I still think the general pacing of the story work ...more

I have a hard time with Sarah Waters's endings. They feel abrupt, rushed and unsatisfying, which is in stark contrast to the other 90-percent of her writings. While this book wasn't my favorite of hers, it was certainly entertaining and interesting. ...more
