What Members Thought

I am torn between 3 and 4 stars. I loved parts of this book and found other parts not fitting as well.
Hamilton is owner and head chef at Prune, a well-reviewed and established restaurant in New York. This book sets out her love of food from her parents, to her on-the-fly education in New York City catering. Her path to recognition and establishment later in life is both gory and determined. Being a woman in this business can be ugly and Hamilton both investigates and dismisses this fact. What s ...more

Excellent memoir, not only about food, but also about people and places - you'll be ready to book the first flight to New York to eat at Prune, and to go straight from there to Italy. I'm not sure I could be best friends with Hamilton, but I found her wonderfully engaging, and so forthright about human fobiles, both hers and those of others. Even better than what I've read of Bourdain, and I enjoy him too. Recommended for any foodie and for those who love memoirs like The Glass Castle or The Lia

This was so enjoyable! Hamilton is a chef in New York who basically tells the story of how she became the chef she is, and along the way we get some great stories about her life. There are some lovely descriptions of food and meals, but as the title hints there are equally squicky ones that keep it balanced. If you enjoy cooking and eating I think you will particularly enjoy this, but I also think that anyone who enjoys a good coming of age type story will also like it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I listened to the audio version which the author reads herself. Gabrielle Hamilton writes beautifully. Her formative years are odd messed up but somehow through hard work and sheer tenaciousness she creates a life doing what she loves. She writes in a such a brutally honest way. At times, I didn't like her or at least found her a bit too self absorbed. Then she would pull me in with her descriptive delicious details of the world of food, cooking, and an industry t

This one has been going around and around in my radar for a while, so when the Overdrive audio became available I decided to give it a listen. I'm really glad Hamilton narrated her own work because it gave me a better idea of her actual voice (see also: Mary Karr and Jenny Lawson). There are points in her life story where she comes off as insufferable - the teenager who lies her way into a job, the grad student who can't stand other grad students, the chef-owner absolutely annoyed that no "good"

Saw The Mind of a Chef with Hamilton and they were talking about the book she wrote, so I wanted to check it out. I don't think that she and I would be friends, but I appreciate what she's been through and what she does. I also don't think I would have liked it as much if I hadn't seen the show first. It gave me some good visuals to go with her story.
