This was so enjoyable! Hamilton is a chef in New York who basically tells the story of how she became the chef she is, and along the way we get some great stories about her life. There are some lovely descriptions of food and meals, but as the title hints there are equally squicky ones that keep it balanced. If you enjoy cooking and eating I think you will particularly enjoy this, but I also think that anyone who enjoys a good coming of age type story will also like it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I listened to the audio version which the author reads herself. Gabrielle Hamilton writes beautifully. Her formative years are odd messed up but somehow through hard work and sheer tenaciousness she creates a life doing what she loves. She writes in a such a brutally honest way. This book makes me sad because it started with such promise, and I enjoyed the first 1/3 so much. Hamilton has a lovely writing style, and she writes about food so well. And then? The final 1/3 of the book was a loose string of complaints about her husband and their Italian vacations. It was such a letdown.

Marvelous stuff! Hamilton unpacks her life with a rare lyrical objectivity, telling her story via significant experiences with food. OK, so the end gets a bit repetitive (we're told over and over about her loveless marriage, for example), but the beginning, about her childhood, is worth the price of the hardcover alone.
