If we, citizens, do not support our artists, then we sacrifice our imagination on the altar of crude reality and we end up believing in nothing and having worthless dreams.
I've read this twice now. Despite knowing what happens, it was still a wonderfully enjoyable read, with lots of 'clues' that i didn't pick up on the first time staring me in the face second time round.

Ah . . . the pressure of BBC booklists. Actually, after 5 pages I was hooked.
Now that I've finished Life of Pi, I'm happy that I got such peer pressure. This tale (is it a metaphor or not?) works on so many levels and gve me much to think about. I think I would have liked this novel a little better if I casually stumbled upon it, but in my case, I think it was overly hyped. The first 1/3 of the book was pretty slow and took me a while to get through, but looking back on it, Pi's description of how he found religion (in many forms) was one of my favorite parts. Once he was lost at sea, the story certainly became interesting, but I didn't feel it was as amazing as others made it out to be.

An amazing story, beautifully told. I read the first few chapters in scattered moments throughout the week; when I sat down last night to read again, I couldn't seem to stop. I read until 3:30 this morning, and would have continued reading except the pages ran out. In the words of Pi, "It is the better story...and so it goes with God."
