What Members Thought

I think this will be a book that will stick with me for a long time...I don't know if I loved it. It was...very different. Some of it was incredibly engaging. But the ending was certainly confounding, and made me think, and...I am not sure WHAT to think. But in a way I do like the open-endedness of it all. I definitely will remember certain things for a long time to come, such as the island and many other small adventures like that. I am astounded that someone can write a book about someone floa

This was a lovely read with a great concept. Martel does a good job of pulling you in with the incredible premise to keep you from thinking about the possible reality of the story. It's one of the few modern framing devices that I've read that I really like.

My roommate told me this book would inspire me to believe in God. It taught me how to train a tiger if I ever find myself sharing a life-boat with one. The writing style is beautiful, but becomes a bit tedious and repetitive at times. The ending was also unsatisfactory and made me angry. In that respect, I guess I did engage with the book more than I originally thought. One of my all time favorite reads! I love the uplifting message about God and faith at the end. The son of a zookeeper is shipwrecked when his family decides to move their animals to Canada via a freighter. He finds himself in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in a 26-foot lifeboat. He is accompanied by a wounded zebra, a spotted hyena, a seasick orangutan and a 450 pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. His harrowing account of survival follows. 2002 Booker Prize. Highly recommended.

Wow, what a book! A wonderful selection for book clubs because there is tons of fodder for discussion. It really made me think and analyze the story, which is a good thing for me. But if you're looking for an easy beach read, this probably isn't it.
