I mean...gorgeous writing. I enjoyed a lot of the story, but: I dislike magical realism. Which is what this book was. So...I can't really say I loved it. But the stories in between the MR were really so well written. Rushdie is a great author. Just not my cup of tea.

DNF-Maybe I'll try again when I'm retired, but I just couldn't get into it, and time is short.

I picked this up in a used book store ages ago. There was the whole fatwah controversy of course, but I had also read and loved Midnight's Children and The Moor's Last Sigh, so I thought I knew what I was in for in reading Rushdie.
Well. This one is different. I enjoyed it, but I'm going to keep it on my shelves for a re-read, some day, after I have read more and educated myself about Islam. Because although I got a lot out of it, I also know I missed a lot because of my extremely thin knowledge ...more

not worth the hype. it's title deals with the verses where mohammed said female deities are just as good as Allah so he could try to win converts ina town. he tried to take it back and was so embarrassed that he left that town, worked up converts elsewhere and came back after 25 years to destroy the "wicked" town. another side story goes into a girl leading a pilgrimage to mecca. the whole reason to be told this story is because one of the characters tries to make a movie about it.

I think I'm classing this for myself as "overly ambitious." It took me about 100 pages to get into, but then I really liked it. But then I felt like he piled on extra plot threads halfway through, and the last 50 pages felt rushed. There is one particular storyline, about racial politics in London, which is interesting but very meandering until it comes to a sudden climax with little warning. The best parts of the book take place in dreams.
