I read this as soon as it was published in the US. I wanted to see what was so offensive about it, what all the fuss was about. Well I didn't find anything offensive about it at all...but then I was not offended by the film The Passion of the Christ, which was enough to send my dad into fits of screaming rage, and I'm not offended by a chocolate Jesus, or anything of that sort...so it's no wonder I was not offended by The Satanic Verses.

I really wish I had read this book in school, or at least that I had an annotated edition. I feel like I was definitely missing out on some shit. But I'm glad I read it; Rushdie's prose is wonderful and I'm still thinking about the book after finishing it. Plus any book that earns the author a death sentence deserves to be read by me. I'd definitely like to revisit it again armed with some supplemental material.

I mean...gorgeous writing. I enjoyed a lot of the story, but: I dislike magical realism. Which is what this book was. So...I can't really say I loved it. But the stories in between the MR were really so well written. Rushdie is a great author. Just not my cup of tea.

It's difficult to dispassionately review this. Back in 2005, I wrote my college thesis on this and Homi Bhabha. The book was close to my heart then, but I haven't re-read it in full since. (And the idea that we should somehow attempt to dispassionately review books is bullshit anyway.)
I could theoretically deduct a star for some of this book's faults--a plot that gets hazy in the final third, an irritating stutter that's played for far too many laughs, a fallback on mental illness as a catch-all ...more
