Want to know the real cause of the Civil War? Or why the South lost it? Or why Abraham Lincoln was so melancholy? Read this book and bone up on some creative alternate history.
Grahame-Smith messes around with the reader's mind in this fun historical romp about vampires, Abraham Lincoln, and the Civil War. I was thoroughly entertained and found the story much more plausible (in some really bizarre ways) and entertaining than I expected. ...more

A strange & fascinating alternate history of the United States. Could vampires really be the evil seed lying beneath the institution of slavery as well as the cause of the Civil War? This very fictionalized account of the life and times of President Lincoln actually did make me want to know more about the real story of Lincoln. The vampires added a very gothic undertone to the history.

I enjoyed Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter much more than Grahame-Smith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The writing was engrossing and sometimes I forgot that I wasn't reading an actual history book because I was so drawn into the story. Grahame-Smith was able to capture the emotional and difficult episodes of this Abraham Lincoln's life while also including some very humorous details.

When I first heard the premise for this book, I was entirely skeptical and very sure I would somehow injure myself with deep and violent eye rolling. Delightfully, I was proved wrong. This was a fantastic little spin on one of the United States of America's most famous historical figures and most dynamic time periods; it was also a fun mental exercise in exploring concepts of fate and freedom.

In the two years since i started borrowing library books again, this is the first novel I've read that has made me want to go out and buy myself a copy to keep. A wonderful story, can't wait to see what happens when it's turned into a film next year.

Sometimes, you forget the premise of the book, then laugh when you think "oh, right, this is Abraham Lincoln fighting vampires.
