When I first read this book in high school, I saw the characters of Heathcliff and Catherine as completely awful, and felt very sorry for the Lintons. This time around, I saw a lot more nuance. I'm still put off by the main characters, but found more redeeming qualities. Still think it's weird that the old movie refers to it as "the greatest love story of our time." I certainly hope not.

Great characters, all in need of therapy of course. I loved that Bronte did not "civilize" anyone but let them play out their fates in all of their glorious selfishness and cruelty. Reading this while on vacation in Boracay, Phillipines, I couldn't help but think they all could have benefitted from a bit of travel.

I can't believe I forgot to rate this! It was one of my favorite books in high school. I'm afraid to reread it. Suppose the characters no longer annoy me now that I'm not an angsty teen?

"Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same". Truly a beautifully written, heartbreaking tragic love story. Sigh....
