I think this book was my favorite of the series, due to its low concentration of Edward Cullen. It turns out Meyer can write interesting characters; it's just that she has chosen not to make them her protagonists.

I thought it was boring.

There's sort of a romantic reference to Romeo and Juliet on page 418. I thought, "Man, if she's started here, this could actually be an exciting book!"

There's so much werewolf hatin' in this book, I want to write my own series where lycanthropists are all glammed out and get all the chicks.

Why is everyone always handling Bella like she's a rambunctious toddler? If my husband ever grabbed me by the chin so hard I couldn't speak correctly, he'd end up with a black eye. An ...more

I read "Twilight" in about three days. I was extremely excited to read the sequel, "New Moon". Although the story was not as well constructed or captivating as it's precursor, Stephanie Meyer is consistent with her accessible writing style and illustrative passages. The romance between Bella and Edwin plays a significantly larger role in this novel, as Bella loses herself completely in self-pity after her and Edwin break-up. Actually, the beginning is pretty good, with Bella once again in danger where she didn't think she would find it, and with her heart being broken. Then we follow her depression until sunshine comes into her life, in the form of Jacob Black. He, unlike Edward, is much more merrier, joyful, comprehensive, nice, intelligent... until he turns into a werewolf and we seem to have a déjà-vu, with Jake feeling This book seemed a bit better than the previous one, more interesting, with a bit more action. Actually, the beginning is pretty good, with Bella once again in danger where she didn't think she would find it, and with her heart being broken. Then we follow her depression until sunshine comes into her life, in the form of Jacob Black. He, unlike Edward, is much more merrier, joyful, comprehensive, nice, intelligent... until he turns into a werewolf and we seem to have a déjà-vu, with Jake feeling like a monster, who can put Bella in danger and, for that, she should stay away from him... That kind of stuff we had already seen happening with Edward. However, Jacob doesn't make her forget her great love and, when Edward finds himself in danger, she doesn't give up and follows him, only to find herself desired by two mortal enemies: vampire and werewolf.

As I said, this book has a bit more action or better, it promises it will have action, because that never appears or it is fulfilled satisfactorily, besides of it being predictable. There's the threaten posed by Victoria, who rarely shows up, since she never gets to Bella and is mostly dealt with the werewolves; there's the threaten posed by the Volturi, who, in my opinion, is never fully developed, since the scene ends up in an innocent martyr, and instead of putting some disgust and fear in Bella, she still won't give up on being turned into a vampire. Here we come to a contradiction.

Let's see, Bella wants to be immortal, a vampire, so she can spend eternity with Edward (ah! and let's not forget she wants to be turned before she gets much older, in appearance, than her boyfriend), however, when he tells her that he will turn her if she marries him, if she takes a commitment to life, the girl thinks twice and three times, and has doubts, since even her mother has something against marriages before 30. So, she's 18 and wants to die to become immortal and spend the rest of her immortal life with Edward, but to get married is out of the question. I think someone has her priorities mixed up.

Like the first volume, it's a nice and easy read at the end of a work day, but the end is left open. We understand Bella will have to make a choice, but can she do it? Next is Eclipse, book that raises very mixed reviews. Let's see if it will convince me... ...more

I find myself in that slightly annoying state of not being able to explain why I read this so quickly... I mean, the writing isn't stellar, I think Bella is annoying and overall I think the entire series is overrated... and yet, it was hard to put down! I guess it falls into that wow, I just want to totally escape from real life for a bit with some mindless entertainment. Ok, I can handle that. ...more

Still immensely enjoyable, despite the subpar writing. I am noticing the poor plotting, wooden dialogue, idiocy of protagonist etc., more, but remain a sucker (haha) for the breathless romance.

As with my review of Twilight, I cannot recommend this as a great book. All of my criticisms of Twilight are true for this one as well.

That said, I literally finished this whole book--all 600 pages of it--in a single day. I was completely exhausted from the night before but stayed up late to finish it anyway. It was ridiculous! And I immediately went out and bought the final two books in the series even though I could only find them in hardback, and I'm a fair chunk of the way into the next one ...more

Yes, there were parts of this that were excruciating. I think if I had read this as my 15-year-old self I would have adored it a lot more. Still- a very fun and very fast read. I couldn't put it down. And am I crazy for liking the OTHER fantastic creatures?

I guess that's the point, huh. Ready for book 3, next weekend- these are far too distracting to read on a lunch break. ...more
