I was reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to my thirteen-year-old and feeling a need to spend a little more time living in the world of Longbourn -- considering rereading Pride and Prejudice when I spied this book on my shelves and grabbed it instead.

At first I was excessively charmed. I did like the concept quite a bit -- of seeing what life was like for the servants as the Bennets were bemoaning their limited fortunes and inheritances in front of them, but I had two problems with the nove

Book Riot Challenge Item: A Historical Fiction Set Before 1900

I think the people who dislike this book because they don't like the way Elizabeth or other Bennets act in it really need to venture out of their protective bubble.

There's a reason the characters in Longbourn are mentioned only in passing in Pride and Prejudice: it's because the upper classes barely noticed that the servant class existed. The portrayal of the Bennets in this book seems perfectly in line with their portrayal in the boo

Just wonderful. I listened to the audiobook on my commute and was mesmerized. I am a huge fan of pride and prejudice and know the book very well, and think those in that position would enjoy this book most. The title Pride and Prejudice could literally translate to "Rich People Problems." If you find your hand reaching up to clutch your pearls at that statement, please go re-read "Darcy and Lizzie Make Out In a Barouche, vol. 152." Because Jo Baker is a badass, and not for you.

Listened to the audiobook, mostly while preparing for Thanksgiving. Good company while dealing with domestic concerns, especially if you want to feel thankful for indoor plumbing and recognizable meat products. I would love t

This has been described as Pride & Prejudice from the servants perspective, but I don't think that's accurate at all. The events of P&P are used as a time line for this story and the characters feel the ripples of those events, but they are secondary to the story here. I loved the characters Baker has created and the love story she imagines happening behind the scenes in the Bennet household. A great story excellently written.

I will add that it doesn't read like Austen at all and it very much is
