I'm glad that this book was selected for book club, because I definitely meant to read it, and never got around to it on my own. It may not be brilliant, and the conversational style is engaging but also on occasion off-putting. Still, I enjoyed this romp through the world of memory, and memory games. Picking this up again, this time on audio, after a failed attempt to read a hard copy from the library a couple of years ago (ironically, I can't remember exactly when).
This was an interesting but uneven read for me. I enjoyed the information on the history of memory and various memory conditions, and found the memory champion crew kind of entertaining. "To think is to forget," writes Borges, but to remember requires a rich imagination, particularly for dirty things, and oodles of practice. Not as riveting as the article in the NY Times magazine on Foer's adventures at the Memory Championships.

I really enjoyed the information about the author's journey from impassive observer to impassioned competitor. It's amazing how memory and mnemonic techniques are interwoven throughout human history. The ending felt a bit rushed but overall a very good read.
