It feels a bit harsh to rate this book only three stars because I did really enjoy it. But I looked back and saw that I gave four stars to Fangirl and decided this one must then get three stars. Because while I enjoyed this book, I don't think it was as good as the book that spawned it.

I mean, what can you really say about a pseudo-Harry Potter gay vampire-wizard love story? I liked it more than I thought I would, and it annoyed me far less. It has all things I love--wizards, dragons, romance, a Chosen One, bad guy(s), fanciful creatures, food...It's not a paragon of originality, but the characters are fun, the story is entertaining, and well, I do love that Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch.

I have not read a book that left me feeling sad when it ended in a very, very long time. I loved everything about the universe, the plot and the character voices. Especially the character voices. (Rainbow Rowell is generally brilliant at writing vivid characters, but she outdoes herself in this one.)

Look, this book is quite light, and the comparisons to Harry Potter are all too clear. BUT it's a lot of fun and almost compulsively readable.

Yet another fantastic story from Rainbow Rowell. When I started this one, I felt like I was reading a copycat Harry Potter. You know, orphan who is the magical savior, his best girl friend who is the smartest person in the room, a school for wizards (or mages). It quickly moved away from anything like Harry Potter though, and thank GOD it did! Don't get me wrong, Love Harry Potter. But there is a slight problem when you start a series with kids that are 10, and move them up to 17. You can't real

I enjoyed this book SO MUCH. Everything about it was so gratifying and wonderful, and I would very much liek to be Penny ASAP.

if you've read Rowell's 'Fangirl,' you know Simon Snow is the Harry Potter-Esque character that novel's main character writes fan fiction about. Well, this is a full-on Simon Snow novel. And if it feels at first like a Harry Potter rip-off, that's intentional. what Rowell does is turn the traditional 'chosen one's narrative, and the Potter series, on its ear. the result is an exciting, smart and achingly romantic novel.

I wanted to like this more than I did. It wasn't bad, just not as amazing as Fangirl. Or Harry Potter. And I wanted it to be both of those things. Those are high expectations for any book. I still love Rainbow Rowell and I hope she writes a Fangirl sequel, or even "Simon Snow and the Mage's Heir."
