This book is bizarrely uneven. I really liked the first 2/3rds – the main character is interesting and she’s doing interesting things. It seemed like every page was passing the Bechdel-Wallace test. The work Billie takes on in the magazine’s archives was fascinating; Billie was a good friend to the people around her—aware, appreciative, and compassionate. The storylines were interesting and unfurling at a nice pace.

A bit of fluff, but it cleanses the palate after reading a violence-laden detective novel. So far, it's the tantalizing food descriptions that are the main course, while a sort of predictable ugly-duckling transformation.and budding romance are broadly foreshadowed. We'll see how they play out. Meanwhile, I am getting hungry!

I really enjoyed Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise by Ruth Reichl. I thought that she was funny and informative, plus I always felt hungry when I listened to a passage. While at the library, I saw that she had a novel coming out, Delicious! which sounded inspiring and fun. I recommended it to the Professors and Partners book club and was excited that it was chosen for the August selection.

Charming although uneven. I picked this up at the library because I like Ruth Reichl's nonfiction. This was a nice fantasy of being a food person in New York. I really enjoyed the food descriptions and the warm relationships between the characters.
