except for some of the research connections she draws that I found to be quite a stretch, or molded to fit her message, this book was super duper for me. There is a lot of totally accessible scientific content here about brain function, psychiatry, sociology. Plus, a great deal about the place of introverts in American culture, which places high value on an extroverted ideal. This is exactly what i was expecting when I picked up this book. I started this book two years ago, then I couldn't find where I put it, then I read the whole thing for my Intro to Psych class. I think this book should be required reading, especially for extraverts. I'm tired of being classified as "shy" when I mention I'm an introvert -- my friends will tell you I'm anything but. Overall, I learned a lot from the book and there was a lot of good information. The book often reads like an academic paper with qualitative research methods. My favorite section was about parenting an introverted child and school environments. I also want to ask people about whether they view themselves as extroverts or introverts. Looking forward to the book club discussion.

It took me a while to read this and I read several books in between, but it was an interesting read and I got into it again at the end. I definitely related to the introvert child Cain describes in the last chapter. Overall I think there's an introvert/extrovert spectrum and not too many people are clearly one or the other, but I found some of the advice helpful and definitely related to some of the descriptions of introverts throughout the book.
