I think this would have been a lot stronger with fewer perspectives. I got completely attached to a few characters; others' concerns seemed to be very low-stakes, and their subplots kind of just dragged.

Sigh. I don't know, maybe my expectations were too high? This book just didn't grab me at all. I only finished it because I kept waiting for it to get excellent, but for me, it never got there. It does a good job of setting the scene, of showing what it's like for a poor Black family to live in Detroit. But other than that, it just didn't work for me. I was very disappointed overall.
