This ended up being much more nuanced than first appearances let us to believe. The author grabs us from the first scene and then takes us through a fun house to come out the other side with a our vision changed. The story starts simply - a young man sets out to meet a group of people who have engaged in guerrilla warfare against the Epics who terrorize normal humans. Interesting concept, fun characters, and fairly good execution. I listened to this book which may have made the repetitive phrasing and endless discussion of the main female character stand out more than if I were reading it.
This was my first Brandon Sanderson and I had to keep reminding myself this was YA and maybe not the writing everyone is always raving about.

i liked this a lot, more than the other sanderson book i read about a year ago (which seemed so into its own world-building that it draaaaaaged after a while). here, sanderson leaves much of the mythology a mystery (though it will surely be a big part of later books in the series) and focuses on the story.
Even if you don't like sci-fi or YA, you should still pick up this book! Action-packed and hard to put down!

Brandon Sanderson has a great style, with a flair for interesting turns of phrase. I was intrigued by a world where super villains suddenly exist, with no one powerful enough to stop them. Enter unlikely heroes.
