I read this for a bookclub coming up next week. I’m a little torn in my overall opinion of this book, as often the language and descriptions were beautiful, some musings even profound (see my Kindle highlights). But the plot left something to be desired. So I can keep this review spoiler free, suffice it to say I found some of the characters’ past choices that essentially drove the plot to be childish and ridiculous. Maybe a little was lost in translation ... maybe I just missed the boat with this one. At least there were some books, a few cats, and select lost loves to provide me company. Right, my takeaways are these mantras from page 323 -- not really spoilers: 1) eat well. No junk food, because it only makes you unhappy, lazy and fat; 2) sleep through the night (thanks to more exercise, less alcohol and positive thoughts); and 3) spend time with people who are friendly and seek to understand you in their ...more
