I read this for a bookclub coming up next week. I’m a little torn in my overall opinion of this book, as often the language and descriptions were beautiful, some musings even profound (see my Kindle highlights). But the plot left something to be desired. So I can keep this review spoiler free, suffice it to say I found some of the characters’ past choices that essentially drove the plot to be childish and ridiculous. A beautiful story, beautiful writing and the lovely idea that books can heal us from all sorts of wounds (given time). The characters were well-drawn, interesting and just quirky enough to make me smile without being irritating. and there was good food (even a few recipes!) and wine...and Paris and the French countryside. Really, what's not to love! ...more

I absolutely loved this story. Everything about it, setting, characters, dialog, themes, was wonderful. There were so many quotes from this book that I kept going back to (always a great sign for me). I read this over the Christmas holiday, which has become a time of reflection for me - reminiscing on past traditions and sadness over those who are no longer here with us. I’ve tried to read this at least 3 times now and I’m finally giving up and admitting defeat. I feel like I should love it - France! Books! Adventure! Romance! Mystery! - but I just don’t like it or care what happens I wonder if it’s partly the translation (it reads funny to me)?

Loved the book barge

Would have liked more books less love story 😂clearly I’m not a romantic! But I loved the descriptions of France and the characters.
