this is my summer of Reading Books That Everyone Said Were Great Five Years Ago. and guess what: it's great! It took me a long time to read it (not counting the 5+ years it took me to start reading it) because I wanted to really savor the language of it. The writing is so lovely and then the skillfulness of Kimmerer's science communication is so strong, like truly combining the botany with the indigenous storytelling and making this beautiful beautiful book. I listened to this book; it was narrated by the author in a calm, yet urgent tone; conveying that her message was too important to minimize or dismiss. She weaves together her perceptions of the world and our place in it as a scientist and as a native woman whose traditions honor the natural world in a way the dominant (colonist) world doesn't.
