The effect of this cannot be understood without being there. The beauty of it cannot be understood, either, and when you see beauty in desolation it changes something inside you. Desolation tries to colonize you.

I really hated most of this book and felt like it was written by a 6th grader (one with an admittedly impressive vocabulary). Every character fell flat for me, and no, I don't think this was because of the no-names device. The world imagined here is interesting, but I would have rather discovered it in a Myst-esque computer game than through this awful narration. I am on the fence about reading the sequel... ...more

This is one of those "why did I wait so loooong, it's soooo gooooood".

And now that I'm also halfway through Book 2 it's even BETTER because I love that the structure of the 2 is very different, through different POV characters. Absolutely hooked. I'm having a very satisfying book beginning to 2023.

Also interesting that I seem to be over the block/hesitation I've had for a few years now of finding it quite hard to read-read books (vs audiobooks which I have happily increased consumption of to m ...more
