This book put me in a confusing mood. Some sort of unsettling, scared, unknown and so many other feelings.
Still I liked it.

Hmm...Annihilation is too weird even for me. There are aspects that I liked but the majority left me all what the heck why and who cares. Having just read On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft in which King recommends stripping down descriptions, I found myself overly critical of a story that seemed primarily to be verbose descriptions. I also dislike never knowing when things are real or hallucinations or memories or lies told by the narrator. It ends up feeling like you spent a long time not getti ...more

Obsessively re-read this trilogy once again, like a normal person. Always find new insights.

I had heard of this book, but was avoiding it because of my usual objections to series. But then Genny thrust her copy into my hands and insisted that I read it, and eventually it ended up in my bag of books for vacation. You're welcome, Genny.) When I finally came to the end, I made my husband stop and find a b ...more

Frustrating. I feel like I have to read the rest of the trilogy to understand this one.

I knew the ending wouldn't be a good payoff for the mysteries set up at the beginning. still, if Amy reads and enjoys further, I'll probably read on to allow some redemption for the overall narrative. ...more

H.P. Lovecraft, eat your heart out. So much of this book reminded me of "At the Mountains of Madness," but still very original. It has the same sense of something that shouldn't be strange being horrifyingly unknown and unknowable. VanderMeer does a good job of balancing the creepy unknown with enough explanation to keep you hooked. No answers at the end, and I'm kind of hoping the next two books don't provide much of an answer either. As soon as you try to explain the creepiness, it's no longer ...more

This book got exceptionally positive reviews from my friends on GoodReads and other bookish sorts. I think it's the kind of story you would like if you enjoyed the TV show "Lost." I didn't like that show and found myself frustrated by this book. It provided few answers and the tone left me irritated. That said, I'm curious enough about Area X to pick up the next part of the series at the library- if only because I'd like a few answers! ...more

Like reading Oryx and Crake crossed with House of Leaves. No nightmares, though.
