Shelves: coming-of-age, ya-fiction, ya-romance

Eh. Rating this is hard - I thought that some parts were worth 5 stars and some worth about 1 1/2.
The beginning: 5 stars! So full of promise! Eleanor is new to school and Park is forced into sitting with her on the bus. Not only does Eleanor have a head of curly red hair, she sticks out in other ways too. Park is half Korean and has his own fitting-in issues. I liked this one, but it was pretty heavy for me to love it. It seems like most folks who've read Rowell in the last year like this one better than Fangirl, but I loved Fangirl. This one had some issues that made it tough to love. I hated Eleanor's stepdad and what Eleanor went through at school. While I enjoy Rowell's writing style, this one will never be a favorite of mine.

Wow, sometimes you forget how messed up teen love can be and how first loves can really mess with your head. Apart from a few places where you had to take a leap of faith (i.e. the mysterious racism that was never shown), Rainbow Rowell captured the unpredictability of a teen romance. Reminded me of Sixteen Candles and other 1980s teen romcoms.
