North American Lake Monsters is profoundly unsettling in the best way. Ballingrud blends contemporary short story influences from things like New Yorker stories with Lovecraftian existential despair. "The Way Station," a story regarding a homeless New Orleans resident post-Katrina searching for his estranged daughter, is beautiful and does justice to the intense complexity and range of emotions the storm caused, plus hauntings. This felt like a very "guy" book to me -- lots of masculine characters, a lot of focus on action and details without emotion, comfortable with psychological creepiness -- and that's fine. I like the creeping build of suspense in a lot of stories; it was effectively done.
