I really enjoyed this book, but I wouldn't say it was the best book ever. The writing is absolutely beautiful and really draws you into this complex plot that slowly unfolds before you.
The problem lies with the middle. The long prose can sometimes be a bit too long and I was getting frustrated a little bit. Also, I love that there are the parallels between Julián and Daniel, but it seemed to parallel a bit too perfectly.

This book was beautifully written. It is part love story, part tragedy, part comedy, and part mystery. It is also a reverential love letter to the city of Barcelona. There are twists and turns that are shocking and beautiful. The two main characters of Julian Carax and Daniel Sempere simmer with emotion. Above all this is a book with a deep appreciation for book lovers and the written word. This is a book I know I will be rereading.
