I found all I wanted to tell in Daniel's review,so I picked some of his reviews which describes my opinion the best :
After reading this book I really didn't know how many stars I should rate it. On the one hand, this is such a beautifully written book. On the other hand, there are some serious flaws which distracts from the whole experience.
The book contains lots of memorable quotes as well, definitely a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

I read this a few years ago. Remember loving it, but not sure what rating to give it. Might read again for a book group and I'll rate then.

Fantastic. Intriguing. Engaging. This book creates a world for the reader to dive into and explore. I liked it so much, that I am pretty sure I started unconsciously reading more slowly over time to prolong my foray into the story the book created. This book has intrigue, mystery, revenge, mysticism, fights, love, altruism and an old bookshop. Don't just take my word for it, read it yourself.

Amazing -- an incredibly beautiful story of a boy whose life is changed when he discovers a novel in a bibliograveyard and decides to chase after the story of its author. Zafon is clearly writing in the tradition of mystical realism, but the plot is so tightly crafted that it all feels completely believable. Also, I would really like to go to Barcelona. Immediately, if possible.

A fabulous book. I don't want to reveal too much since half the awesomeness is unraveling the many layers. A quick and fun read.

Fantastic. Some books create a world that you feel you inhabit for the time you navigate through the pages between the covers anyhow. I think I specifically read slower to prolong my visit into this world. (Sorry! Cheese police! I know!) It's a little bit mystery, mysticism, love, danger, altruism, and revenge. What's not to engage you? I highly recommend it. Don't just take my word for it...

Well, I'm sorry to say that this is yet another book that I didn't finish. I think my standards have changed since I only have a few precious minutes to read every day before I fall asleep. I gave it 100 pages, and I didn't dislike it, but I also wasn't excited to pick it back up again. It just didn't grab me, somehow.

I liked this book...there was mystery, love and twists and turns that I just didn't expect. I also didn't know about the troubling period in Spain's history after their civil war and that was also intriguing.
