I really enjoyed this book, but I wouldn't say it was the best book ever. The writing is absolutely beautiful and really draws you into this complex plot that slowly unfolds before you.
The problem lies with the middle. The long prose can sometimes be a bit too long and I was getting frustrated a little bit. Also, I love that there are the parallels between Julián and Daniel, but it seemed to parallel a bit too perfectly.

Engrossing historical whodunnit surrounding books. Definitely makes me want to visit Barcelona and see all the places that are mentioned... but ultimately unsatisfying. I guessed one of the big twists (there are several) early on, which made the rest of the story feel a little spun out until that twist was "discovered" and the hows and whys came out. This book had some minor flaws — slow start, too many characters, some unnecessarily graphic elements - but overall is an incredible feat of storytelling, filled with mystery, adventure, and intrigue.
It’s so cinematic I was surprised it hasn’t been made into a movie, until I learned the author refused to sell the film rights. Made me love him and the novel even more.
4.75/5

Finished with a combination of paper and audio book. I really liked the labyrinthine plotting - even if it did slow the reading down - and the recreation of the Spain and Barcelona of the Spanish Civil War and Franco. It was very atmospheric. The ending was both climactic (action!) and anti-climactic (because I’d guessed all the reveals since those bits were all very Victorian-Gothic-ish). And now I can read the rest of the books in the series.

Vanessa told me it was great and it is. it was a little slow going at the beginning, but once it got going i couldn't stop. what a mess, that's all i can say.
