Ok so I don't really know how I feel about this book XD First of all, I'm a bit disappointed because there are too much vagueness in this final installment of the otherwise very engaging series. Maybe I expected more answers but instead only got more questions, so that was pretty annoying for me. The thing I like about this book is the different POVs that Vandermeer tried to explore. We were taken to the very beginning of the pre Area X period, from the Lighhouse Keeper's POV (my favorite). Then ...more

The five stars is really for the overall trilogy, and this one probably was the least "grabby" of the three for the first half. Too many new-ish characters (or very changed old characters) and the mystery of it all still had me at a bit of a distance.

But at a certain point I got definitely GRABBED and then all in, yup, and it all came together in a way that absolutely worked for me. Adding VanderMeer to the list of writers I'll just keep reading whatever they put out into the world. Also, his t

I'm really not sure how to rate this trilogy! I liked it enough that I read all three books, which definitely says something, as I am not unwilling to stop mid-book if I'm not enjoying it. I really, really love the atmosphere created in these books. There is a constant creepy tension that is very effective. But I'm really not sure I understood much of what happened. I had to just give up any desire to really figure out what was going on and just roll with it, enjoying the ride. I didn't truly un ...more

Where lies the strangling fruit that came from the hand of the sinner I shall bring forth the seeds of the dead to share with the worms.

I thought this series was phenomenal. It is weird, quirky, gorgeous, unpredictable, eerie, and different.

When I can, I like to start my review with a quote that simultaneously captures the essence of the book and also intrigues a potential reader. Sometimes choosing a quote is easy. Sometimes no quote presents itself. Sometimes I have no idea which quote to

I think I wanted to like this book more than I actually did like it. Unlike the previous books, this last one bounces in time and to different narrative perspectives. That means also that the tone and imagery shifts. I kept thinking that the book should suck me in like syrup, to a world where a shift in time was reflected in my sense of being pulled into that world. But each narrative shift pulled me out - so that some narratives were fascinating, some offputting, some even a kind of a disdain f ...more

I was not that far into this when I decided that I definitely need to re-read this whole trilogy, back to back. It's so intricate, it took me a bit to remember who people were, and their connections. But, I very much enjoyed this. The surreal aspect of the world is kept up very well in this final installment, but a lot of threads are connect as well. And the ending was satisfying!

August 2019: I did still enjoy this, and the way you can put the pieces together. But there are a couple of scenes th

This felt like a slog through the mud of several people's remembrances, across much distance of time and space. I did enjoy the sections from the perspective of the lighthouse keeper, but the others were either boring, or too confusing, or trying too hard to tie every end together. I don't recommend the series. ...more

The finale to the Southern Reach trilogy left just as many questions unanswered as answered, but I was prepared for that and fully enjoyed the ride. This series is a complete mind trip, with the first book closely focused on the biologist and the subsequent books meticulously expanding the scope bit by bit. Can't wait for the movie to come out early next year. ...more

I really like these books because I’m never exactly sure what is going on and they are so unique and creative. I think this one resolved some questions?
