I'm so excited to throw away all my stuff now!! This was super interesting and I can't stop talking about it now. There are a few things in here that are like, a little bit beyond? But overall, awesome and I think will be really good for me to put into practice.

I feel like I need to apologize to my mother for giving her this as a gift prior to me reading it. Holy shit was this one of the most horrific books I have ever read. Honestly, I think Kondo is trying to normalize her issues that sound very compulsive by encouraging others to join her. No thank you. I cannot add the stress of thanking my house when I'm already stressed out about the state of my house.

It seems somewhat unfair to rate this book when I haven't tried to implement her system, but I highly doubt that day will ever come. I like books that inspire me to de-clutter, but this one is a little out there. I can't see asking myself whether every single possession I own "sparks joy" or not. There is a very funny/sarcastic review here on goodreads that sparked a fair amount of joy, though.

Interesting touchy-feely book on getting rid of clutter and organizing personal belongings in the home. Author urges reader to tackle possessions by category (clothes, books, documents, etc.) and handle each item physically, asking if it brings joy. Simple approach but it sounds effective. The parts where she talks to inanimate objects regularly to thank them was a little weird to me, but a nice gesture.

This was inspiring, and also soothing. I was thrilled to realise, after reading the book, that there is also a Netflix show starring the author. I highly recommend both the book and the show.

There are definitely some useful tips in here that helped me think about the way my house is organized. She has good insight for the reasons we hold onto things that are no longer useful to us so I think I'll modify my approach to decluttering.
On the other hand, it's very repetitive and some of her techniques don't seem to be relevant to my life. I'm not a skimmer, but the last 20 pages or so of this book were definitely skimmed over/flipped through. ...more
