This was much easier to follow than the other Murakami book I have read, The Wind Up Bird Chronicles. It tells the story of a young man dealing with death, love and sex as he moves from a teenager to an adult. The suicide of his best friend is the turning point from childhood to the next stage because

This was a sweet book, and I enjoyed it, but for me it didn't really pack the emotional punch that Kafka on the Shore did. I did especially enjoy the Beatles references, and discussions of how pop music can emotionally resonate. But still, it ultimately didn't resonate with me as much as the book's namesake does.

I can't believe I hadn't read this book until now. I flew through it and I loved it. I loved the mood, the atmosphere, the characters. Despite it being translated, it somehow maintains its poetic writing (major props to the translator).

Very high 3. I really missed the surreal touches, but there's enough of the Murakami atmosphere (melancholy, mystery, etc.) to make this highly enjoyable.
