My reaction to a lot of this was just like, nodding and thinking "That's clever, I get it" (or reading a footnote and then being like "now I get it"). Like I get what it's doing as a Gothic parody but because of that I wasn't particularly engaged with the characters. Like obviously Austen is an iconic writer but this just isn't my fav of hers.

This was...interesting Austen. Clearly her earlier writing, thus she hadn't yet developed her talents to their height, but it was a fun read. Much like her later works, but just a little bit less refined. More adventure - she wrote (tongue-in-cheekly, of course) like she was a young girl who read a lot of gothic romances about castles, and learned her novel-writing skills from thence. I've read this book before, ages ago as a part of a Gothic Literature course I took in college. This most recent read was for family bedtime story tie. There are some very funny moments and biting satire here (mostly of gothic and popular literature), especially early on. Towards the end it starts to feel like her more famous novels, with everyone more or less getting their just desserts, but perhaps a little less deftly.

I generally enjoyed this one, until the end. The fact that the whole plot got resolved in one giant information dump with no dialog and little action was anticlimactic and frustrating - though I'm not sure I wish it had been fleshed into 50 more pages, either.

3.5 stars. It's Jane Austen so of course the writing sparkles and there are some great characters. The story, however, is a lot less compelling than her great novels.
