Read for Read Harder Challange 2018, Task 1 (A book published posthumously).

If I consider today's books this book will get 3 * from me, but considering the time Jane Austen wrote this it deserves 4 * I think. My favorite Jane Austin's book remains Pride and Prejudice.

My reaction to a lot of this was just like, nodding and thinking "That's clever, I get it" (or reading a footnote and then being like "now I get it"). Like I get what it's doing as a Gothic parody but because of that I wasn't particularly engaged with the characters. This was...interesting Austen. Clearly her earlier writing, thus she hadn't yet developed her talents to their height, but it was a fun read. I generally enjoyed this one, until the end. The fact that the whole plot got resolved in one giant information dump with no dialog and little action was anticlimactic and frustrating - though I'm not sure I wish it had been fleshed into 50 more pages, either.

The character of Catherine Morland appealed to me a lot. There's a certain silliness and immaturity to her that feels authentic, but not annoying. I often feel that Austen wrote "bigger" characters later on, which some people love. (I don't

3.5 stars. It's Jane Austen so of course the writing sparkles and there are some great characters. The story, however, is a lot less compelling than her great novels. ...more
