This was an odd book. On one hand the writing! Not overly flowery, but ethereal in its simplicity, sensual even. Reader, know that this is a book that has plenty o' sexual moments, which is fine, but this book is apparently given to high schoolers? Um, Gertrudis and her "liberation"? Pedro peeping on Tita all the time? And don't get me started on (view spoiler)

A fresh and earthy tale of a Mexican girl and her men...and how they all overlap into the kitchen. The earthiness is somehow not offensive but is sensual...as in relates to the senses...rather than sexual.

Not my book. I get really limited mileage out of magical realism these days, and the love story is pretty much everything I hate in love stories. I did enjoy the recipes and food writing, and Gertrudis is THE BEST ever.
