I’m glad I read it, but would never read again. The middle drags, the dialogue is stilted and maybe sort of dated (??), and I didn’t find really any character to connect with (they are all so cold and calculating). That being said the world building is good (pretty obviously) and I definitely left interested in the fate of Arrakis, just not enough to be willing to slog through the additional books with characters I don’t care about... at least not now. Might revisit the series in the future?

Every bit as good as people say it is. Don't know why I waited so long to read it, but glad I finally did. Thanks Mary!

I kept going between 3 and 4 stars for this book, but in the end went higher because it is epic. I can't believe I got this far in life without reading Dune. I liked the deep world building, the mysticism and the plots within plots. I did not like the repetitive phrasing and really think Herbert could have used a stricter editor. However, I'm glad I read it and I think I'll try the other Dune books as well.

it takes a bit to figure out what is happening. you're not going to get much backstory. copy i had, had a glossary in the back that explained some terms....found that out when i finished it. would have been nice to know that before that.
