Dune, the science fiction classic and patron tome of nerds everywhere, is a hell of a book. Totally epic storytelling, fun characters, and interesting world. This is a major piece of the scifi/fantasy canon for a reason, and its worth reading.

Dune had been calling me.
From the moment it arrived in a box full of books from my sister (I had lent it to her previously but I needed it back to review it for the 100 books list), it had been calling me.
Every single time I finished a book and wandered to the bookshelf to decide what to read next, it called me.

I finally got around to reading this one after a lifetime of feeling guilty for having not gotten to it yet. I appreciated it from the standpoint of building a complex story and really creating a complete universe. But it left me cold, somehow. I felt like it kept the reader at arm's length, and there weren't any characters to really latch onto and root for. And the jargon was really confusing and offputting at times. I feel a little unfair about giving this three stars, because for the 24 hours or so after I read it, I thought about it pretty much constantly. The planet of Dune, and all of the surrounding world building, was really interesting. However, the character development was clumsy, and the writing style really grated at times - I found it a bit of a trek to get through.
