I didn't find the story very believable - too melodramatic with lots of "secrets" that weren't that surprising. The characters were not very interesting or compelling. I liked the setting but would prefer either a history or something more literary set in the same time period. I read about half before I skimmed the rest.

This would really be a three and a half. It's a good story with original aspects but overall I found it predictable.

I enjoyed this, but I was left wanting more. On the one hand, it can be a good thing to end a novel where there are still very clearly things to come for the characters, but on the other it sometimes feels like it gives the story short shrift. In this case, I was very interested in how the main character was going to make her way - so many things had changed for her by the end of the novel! You see her grow as she gets through each new challenge, but I think taking the reader a bit farther along

I want to like this book more than I do. But... there's something missing. The plot is intriguing, with the setting of Amsterdam in 1680s, but it is really slow and a bit tiring. The characters are not easy to be liked, and the ending and the answer of the mysteries are not satisfying. I hope for more clear, contented answers - but all I got is an unclear ending. I love the element of the history though.
