What Members Thought

This book delighted me more than I thought it would! It's a cute, sweet story just perfect for women in their late 20s and early 30s. The 90s setting is perfect for my generation, too. We'll get a lot of the references that will probably date the book within a few years (when the target audience may not get a lot if the references). That was part of what made the book so fun for me!
The audio recording is nicely narrated, with enough differentiation in the voices that you could tell whose email ...more

Is it historical if it's set in 1999? Not technically, but it's rooted in a certain point of time, so we'll shelve it there.
Fairy sweet tale of an awkward man who gets a job in IT reading flagged emails for a cautious newspaper and gets wrapped up reading the (against the rules and so flagged) personal emails of two staffers, Beth and Jennifer, and finds himself in love with Beth. In fairness, this is the kind of book that I probably wouldn't have picked up if I hadn't read and loved the author's YA books. It's basically a romcom--it's well done but adult romcoms aren't super my thing? (Not judging those who love them, they're just not my thing.) But if you do like romcoms you will probably love this. (Awhile ago I was talking to my friend Kait and she said something that I agreed with & basically pinned down why I like YA books but not so much romcoms--it makes SENSE for

Based on the premise, going into this book I felt like it had to have a really unrealistic ending or end badly, but I figured I'd try it anyway since I liked Eleanor & Park so much. About halfway through I realized how much I liked the characters & that the premise wasn't as cheesey or creepy as I originally thought. One part of the ending was weird, but overall it ended without being unrealistic or bad, so I'm happy with it - & impressed again with Rainbow Rowell's writing.

At a newspaper in a small town, Lincoln (a lonely loner with no direction in life) is hired to read flagged emails and issue warnings to employees. He starts reading the chatty and not-work-appropriate emails of two best friends (Beth and Jennifer) and comes to fall in love with one of them from reading her emails.
Good character growth but it went on a bit too long. And the "he stalked me, how cute is that" thing can read as creepy but the author does the characters justice in the end. ...more

I heart this book for several reasons:
1) I love the e-mail exchanges between friends. I love books with letter exchanges more..bonus points when they are in handwriting instead of type, but I suppose I can embrace the modern era in which we live.
2) Adorkable--there are many charming moments that embrace smart things that are a bit nerdy
3) I feel like Rainbow Rowell is like the cousin to John Green and I am so glad she is writing books!
