As a book, this was really a fantastic reading experience for me, but as a mystery, it had a few flaws, so it didn't quite make 5 stars.

The plot: A little girl is found murdered at an archaeological dig outside a small Dublin suburb, and Detectives Rob Ryan and Cassie Maddox catch the case.

Things I loved:

Into the Woods is so completely overwritten that I wasn't sure I was going to get anywhere with it, but after a chapter or two I got used to the rhythm and writing style enough that I got sucked in, and from there I couldn't put it down.

In spite of how fast I read it, though, I don't think it's actually a very good book. It's completely implausible that a detective would sign onto a case that is so immensely personal to them and so obviously against department rules for them to be taking on - ri

Well that was fantastic. Though I had a feeling I knew who the "bad guy" was fairly early on in the book, French does an amazing job of weaving various plot lines and story arcs together so that even having that inkling meant I was thoroughly engaged and could barely put the book down. And not only were the plot lines intricately done, but her character development is also fairly nuanced. Somehow she managed to create a "hero" who at most points I thought was a total wanker. My feelings about this one are so mixed. It was well written, the main character was insufferable (but at least I FELT something about him, which I think is a sign of good writing), and the ending...well... I don't know, I'm torn. ...more

Masterful as always, and it introduces a main thread that runs through a lot of her novels: the nature of insanity, and the nature of reality.
