This was absolutely spellbinding, a rare detective story that actually makes you care equally about the characters and the mystery itself. Beautiful wistful writing throughout, and I loved the way the ending didn't tie everything up neatly but also didn't feel like a copout. Something for us aspiring mystery writers to, uh, aspire to. ...more

This book came highly recommended to me by a friend... Sadly, it just didn't quite do it for me. At its core, it's a good story and the mechanics of the writing are fine. In my perspective, it just wasn't a tight story-- there's a lot of talk about the weather (constantly reading about just how rainy it is in Ireland), long descriptions of just what pop music Ryan and his partner listen to, just how lovely a cigarette is, and long passages in which the main character tries to justify himself but ...more

Into the Woods is so completely overwritten that I wasn't sure I was going to get anywhere with it, but after a chapter or two I got used to the rhythm and writing style enough that I got sucked in, and from there I couldn't put it down.

In spite of how fast I read it, though, I don't think it's actually a very good book. It's completely implausible that a detective would sign onto a case that is so immensely personal to them and so obviously against department rules for them to be taking on - ri

This Edgar Award winner had such potential that it just didn't live up to. I came away quite dissatisfied by the non-resolution. Annoyed, too, as I had kept reading hoping there would be a solution to two crimes, not just one. That being said, I did enjoy the characters and their relationship as partners. I always enjoy police procedurals (except for the abundance of strong language that seems to accompany them) and didn't want to put this one down. I lost sleep for nothing, really. But I intend ...more

My feelings about this one are so mixed. It was well written, the main character was insufferable (but at least I FELT something about him, which I think is a sign of good writing), and the ending...well... I don't know, I'm torn. ...more
