I totally agree with Emily. I loved, loved, loved the first half of the book, the third quarter got weirdly introspective and emo, and then picked up again at the end. I'll definitely read the next book in the series, though.

I loved that this took place in Ireland, that there were flawed police detectives, that the plot was somewhat unpredictable and didn't end in a way I could have foreseen. (view spoiler)

Tedious and ultimately unsatisfying. I figured it out 100 pages in and should have had the good sense to quit then.

Frustrating book IMHO. The relationship between Rob/Adam and Cassie made me want to scream! Cassie - don't do it! Grrr! Never finding out what happened to Jamie and Peter was disappointing. But real life is probably like that. You don't always get to tie up all the loose ends, and men will be men. (Still Rob's man cave is the deepest, darkest one ever!) This was far more emotionally taxing than the usual detective novel/thriller! Very well-written and complex (I actually probably read it too quickly in many ways as I think there are layers/nuances of foreshadowing and structure that I glossed over). While I anticipated certain aspects of the ending/resolution, Tana French boldly leaves plot elements unsolved in a way you don't typically see in this genre.

Definitely recommend this for lovers of detective/crime/thrilled fiction. Now, on to Book

I enjoyed this novel; I wasn't sure what to expect because I don't read a lot of mysteries, but I liked the characters a lot. The mystery itself wasn't that interesting, but the back story for the main detective was fascinating, and that made the whole novel more enjoyable. ...more

Unusually good police procedural novel. The main character becomes overly involved in a case which reflects a traumatic episode from his own life. Very good psychological suspense
