A história em si é bastante conhecida, conta da raiva de Aquiles e de como este se recusa a lutar, e as consequências de tal ato. Contudo, apesar de Aquiles se manter fora da ação, a história aqui contada foca-se sobretudo nas batalhas e na enumeração de todos os heróis (e mais alguns) que lutaram, pereceram e sobreviveram durante aqueles dias, o que leva o livro a tornar-se repetitivo e aborrecido.
