I Am Not a Slut was frustrating to read, and I frequently set it aside for other books that made me feel not so upset about society. Tanenbaum explores the changing use of the word "slut" and presents her ideas on why the word shouldn't be used at all. While the semantic debate felt forced at times, she raises many complicated and important issues about women's mental health and the social pressures related to the sexuality of young women living in the United States in the early 2000s. A very necessary update to Tanenbaum's previous book, Slut!: Growing Up Female with a Bad Reputation. One-quarter updated information, three-quarters new material.
While I have one or two minor squabbles about distinct points, the major point of this book is that the term "slut" (and by extension "ho" ) is not a term that can be reclaimed due to the sexual double-standard that makes use of the term as a way to shame and degrade young women while upholding the same behavior in males. ...more
