What Members Thought
So did this deserve the National Book Award? The Pulitzer? Yeah, ok, I can see why. The prose is beautifully descriptive (Saint-Malo, am I right?), and I liked how the different characters blended together. The jumps in time didn't bother me, as it was blatantly obvious what time frame we were in. Those last 40 pages or so...meh. The book kinda fizzled out for me. The fifth star is for the chapters that read like poems. My favorites are the section about the sea "holding everything you could ever feel," and the parts that compare peaches to "wet sunlight." There's more, but it's really the writing that earned the extra star from me.
