What Members Thought

An entirely different book than the one I read in 8th grade! My recent infatuation with all things dystopian drew me to re-read this classic. It's eerily still relevant today, 60 years after it was first published. I just can't imagine how a middle- or high schooler could fully appreciate the book's social commentary and theme. To be frank, I'm sure that I'm missing a lot of it. I'll probably read this again in another 20 years.

I am not sure why I was never required to read this book in school-- probably because there is sex in it and I went to public school in TX where there is NO sex.
Anyway, "1984" is one of those books that I sort of feel like I'd read already. It was more-or-less what I'd expected but that didn't make me enjoy it any less. I especially liked how "the book" was excerpted and the appendix with a history of Newspeak.
