I suppose I should have something deep and profound to say about this book. I only read this as a selection for my book club at my local library, and while I am glad I read it, I don’t think I’ll read it again and found it a hard to read. It also took me a long time to get through it. It did make me think about the evolution and change in history (including written records) and how that is sometimes a good thing and sometimes a bad thing. Maaaan 1984! I read this a BUNCH of times in middle school and high school. It was my first "dystopian" novel, and I ate it up like crazy. Even beyond the concepts he raised, though, it's the imagery that stays with me even today. Like the tobacco falling out of the end of his cigarette. And waiting on line in a cafeteria. And tossing that photograph into the pneumatic tube to the incinerator. And overalls.

This book describes a mood, so beware, dear reader, and do not finish it before bedtime.
I managed to live 26 years before reading this book and I will forever be changed (and maybe a little paranoid) because of it. Orwell uses real events in this story to paint a picture about the inevitable loss of humanity and sense of helplessness that comes from our choices as a society.
