This was my second time reading a Murakami book (the first being Kafka on the Shore). The two books are VERY similar, with characters setting out on increasingly supernatural quests of which they understand very little from the onset. In this one, the main character's cat leaves, and then his wife leaves, and suddenly he finds himself interacting with many strange women and spending increasing amounts of time deliberately shut up in the bottom of a dry well behind an abandoned house down the str ...more

I read like 9/10ths of this book before I left for the States and was LOVING it. And then I didn't want to bring such a big book with me on the plane when I had hardly any left to read, and then when I came back and finished it I was a little like, what? It was almost shocking to abruptly re-enter the vaguely magical world Murakami had painstakingly set up throughout the book. Still though, wonderful. ...more

The only thing I really wanted to say about this book was that Toru met with Malta Kano IN THE TEA ROOM OF THE HOTEL I STAYED IN IN TOKYO. I just thought that was pretty jaw-dropping to contemplate, and I couldn't get over it for a while. Might have been what drew me further into the book, more than anything.

I really liked this book. But did I really understand it? Great question. Thank you. You’re welcome. But DID I really "get" it? I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I think I "got" 65-75%. That leaves a healthy chunk of book that I feel like may have escaped me in some capacity or other. I'm very much looking forward to reading some critical opinions/analyses of this book.
