This was my second time reading a Murakami book (the first being Kafka on the Shore). The two books are VERY similar, with characters setting out on increasingly supernatural quests of which they understand very little from the onset. In this one, the main character's cat leaves, and then his wife leaves, and suddenly he finds himself interacting with many strange women and spending increasing amounts of time deliberately shut up in the bottom of a dry well behind an abandoned house down the str ...more

I read like 9/10ths of this book before I left for the States and was LOVING it. And then I didn't want to bring such a big book with me on the plane when I had hardly any left to read, and then when I came back and finished it I was a little like, what? It was almost shocking to abruptly re-enter the vaguely magical world Murakami had painstakingly set up throughout the book. Still though, wonderful. ...more

I'm giving this book three stars not because it is in any way average, but because I feel extremely conflicted about it and am hedging. I just finished it and may need some time to digest; that said, I definitely preferred 1Q84. ...more

Still absorbing it all. Tried to explain the general plot of the book to my husband and made a hash of it. This guy is looking for his cat and then his wife leaves him and he meets a bunch of weird people and he feels compelled to go the dry well in the vacant yard of a house in his neighborhood. So did I sell you on it??

Usually i have to push myself to finish a book but Murakami interested me all the way through.

There were parts of this book that were beautiful, compelling and strange. But there was a huge plot element that seemed to lead nowhere, which is a peeve of mine. I'm normally so enthralled with Murakami and a friend said this was her favorite of his, but I think I get more from his shorter works. ...more

Fun and weird and sad and emotive and thematically satisfying, even if not terribly plot-satisfying.
