I love books that mix art and story, so Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was intriguing to me. Riggs' use of photographs to complement the story was a great idea, yet I ultimately felt like the book started stronger than it ended. When we meet Jacob, he's working at a drugstore in Florida, trying to take care of his grandfather and nearly friendless. Teen paranormal thriller. I listened to this on audio so I didn't see any of the old photographs sprinkled throughout the text. I felt Jacob, the narrator and main character, had an authentic teen voice and was a sympathetic character. The plot - sort-of X-Men with a time travel angle - didn't do much for me and I found myself zoning out at various points. Okay but not the book for me.
